Monroe County Fire Rescue's crew members value their interaction with the residents and visitors they serve. They host or participate in a variety of community work and engagement throughout the year.
Beat the Heat
Beat the Heat is a great way to meet your neighborhood firefighters and cool off from the summer sun. Each summer, firefighters provide a series of Beat the Heat events throughout the Florida Keys. These events include gentle streams of misting water for children of all ages to run through and enjoy in a safe and fun environment. There is also free snow cones and giveaways.
Children are encouraged to wear bathing suits and sunscreen, old tennis shoes or sneakers, and should bring a towel.
Beat the Heat events are listed on the Monroe County Fire Rescue calendar once they are scheduled.
National Night Out
The Firefighters and Trauma Star crew make appearances at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office National Night Out event throughout the Florida Keys. It usually takes place in August.
Fire Prevention Week
Monroe County Fire Rescue participates in National Fire Prevention Week by teaching local students and children in daycares throughout the County how to prepare, prevent, and escape fires. This year, the event is Oct. 7-11 and each Monroe County Fire Rescue station will present "Not every hero wears a cape, plan your escape."
Flight to the North Pole
The Flight to the North Pole takes place in early December and is put on by the Silverliners at Key West International Airport. The firefighters volunteer at the event that is geared toward pre-school and kindergarten Monroe County students.
Holiday Parades
Each year, the firefighters spend several nights driving Santa around local neighborhoods. Parades and routes are listed on the calendar when they are scheduled.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Big Coppitt Fire Station
Station Big Coppitt hosts an annual Easter Egg hunt on its fire station grounds, complete with a visit from the Easter bunny and snow cones.
