It is an interactive parent-child time with fun activities designed to promote early literacy, language development and a love of books for 0 to 2 years old. During Toddler Story-time, a librarian reads aloud and leads adult-child pairs in activities. Toddler Story-time also supports early literacy by building vocabulary and sharing age-appropriate literature in an atmosphere of fun, engaging activity.

Mark Powell has been called the “best Appalachian novelist of his generation” by Ron Rash, and a writer “on the verge of greatness” by Pat Conroy. He is the author of five novels, including his latest, Small Treasons, which David Joy, author of Where All The Light Tends To Go, says, ” achieves that rare balance between complexity and pacing, a story rich and intricate, propulsive and satisfying. Mark Powell has been the South’s best-kept secret for far too long.”
Powell has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers’ Conferences, and in 2014 was a Fulbright Fellow to Slovakia. In 2009 he received the Chaffin Award for contributions to Appalachian literature. He holds degrees from Yale Divinity School, the University of South Carolina, and the Citadel. He lives in the mountains of North Carolina where he teaches at Appalachian State University.

The Key West Library is offering a free 8-week Short Story Workshop titled “Writing on the Autograph Tree,” led by author Edgardo Alvarado-Vazquez (The Funerals of Key West and Don’t Read This Poetry Book). Participants will meet every Wednesday, June 7th through July 26th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm to discuss and work on their short story.
