CREWS WORK THROUGH THE NIGHT ON BIG PINE KEY BRUSH FIRE; MANY SCATTERED HOTSPOTS REMAIN

BIG PINE KEY, FL – Fire crews worked through the night on the Big Pine Key brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon and quickly spread across the island in the Lower Keys.

“We did not lose any ground or any more structures last night,” Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty Senterfitt said Monday morning. “Many people worked long hours without sleep to protect people’s homes and prevent the fire from spreading.”

There remains many scattered hotspots throughout the path of the fire, which began along Hibiscus Drives and moved toward Fern Avenue. About 100 acres burned, according the Florida Forestry Service.

An Incident Command meeting is set for 8 a.m. to set the response plan for the rest of the day.

 There remains no reports of injuries from the fire. One house, with a separate garage, were destroyed
