NAS Key West Increases Readiness Condition for Tropical Storm Isaac
NAS KEY WEST, Fla. – Naval Air Station Key West is setting Hurricane Condition of Readiness Three (COR III) in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac.
COR III is set when a storm threatens the area with destructive winds expected within 48 hours.
Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 is scheduled to leave today as per its normal schedule and most of the F-5s from Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC) 111 will leave Saturday. The remaining aircraft, including the station's two search and rescue helicopters, will remain and be sheltered.
There are no current plans for NAS to evacuate Key West and military personnel and families should make preparations to possibly shelter in place - meaning stay at home - when directed by their chain of command.
The forecast in the next 24 hours will bring decisions on the status of marina residents and visitors staying at the NAS Key West Morale, Welfare and Recreation Vacation Rental trailers.
"The important thing to remember as we head into the weekend is for the folks on base to keep in communication with their commands," said NAS Key West Commanding Officer Capt. Patrick Lefere. "There is always the possibility that things could change and our personnel need to be aware throughout the weekend."
