On Monday morning, Dec. 11, 2017, Monroe County Fire Rescue responded to two house fire calls 30 minutes apart in the Lower Keys. Both homes were unoccupied, and no one was injured at either fire.

The first call occurred at 9:15 a.m. Crews from Big Pine Key, Sugarloaf Key and Big Coppitt Key responded to a two-story house fire at 456 Bayshore Drive on Ramrod Key. It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames. Naval Air Station Key West also responded with a heavy rescue vehicle to provide support.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday, Monroe County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a second fire, at a one-story wood-frame house at 30425 Poinciana Rd. on Big Pine Key.

Firefighters from Stock Island and Big Coppitt Key quickly extinguished flames from one room and the contents of a bedroom. Units on scene ventilated the house to remove smoke.
