Mayor Charles "Sonny" McCoy was born and raised in the Florida Keys, a third generation conch, with children and grandchildren who love the Keys. He attended primary and secondary schools in Monroe County, has an Architectural Degree from the University of Florida, and a Masters in Business from Central Michigan University.

He is a Registered Architect in Florida, North Carolina, Arizona and National Registry and has won both national and international awards for architecture. He has designed and restored many buildings of worship including the design of the B’Nai Zion Synagogue and the restoration of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He has designed schools and banks from Key Largo to Key West which include the Key Largo Elementary School and Stanley Switlik Elementary School in Marathon. He also designed the Marathon Library, the main Post Office in Key West, the Justice Building on Whitehead Street, the Ocean Key House Resort on Duval Street, the Galleon Resort on Front Street, the Park and Ride and the Flagler Historium. Commissioner McCoy and his wife, Merili, have six children and seven grandchildren.

Mayor McCoy was re-elected for another year term as a Monroe County Mayor but previously served as Commissioner, and before that Mayor of Key West for five consecutive terms and is the longest serving mayor since 1822. During his tenure he brought Key West out of near bankruptcy and won a national award for the transformation of his community. He was adept at finding grant money for the island and the list of projects he accomplished is long and visible. Commissioner McCoy is also the first to have served as the Mayor of both Key West and Monroe County.

On September 10, 1978 then Mayor McCoy skied from Key West Harbor to Havana Harbor in six hours and ten minutes on one ski non-stop, which is a record to this day.
Mayor McCoy’s purpose of service is to ensure the safety and beauty of the Florida Keys.
