Code Enforcement Division
The purpose of the Code Enforcement Division is to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Monroe County through an effective code enforcement program. Because of the physical lay out of Monroe County the Division is divided into three offices; Upper Keys Code Enforcement, Middle Keys Code Enforcement and Lower Keys Code Enforcement. All together the division employs 10 inspectors under the supervision of a Director. The Division has authority throughout the unincorporated area of the County. Municipalities in Monroe County provide their own code enforcement activity. MMC8
Currently, Code Enforcement is responsible for the enforcement of Monroe County codes, ordinances and regulations. These include land use regulations, the Building Code, the Electrical Code, the Plumbing Code, Contractors Licensing and Floodplain ordinances. MCC 8. Code Enforcement is not responsible for the enforcement of any deed restrictions.
The Division’s workload is principally proactive; however, a substantial number of citizen complaints are received annually concerning alleged violations of the County’s various regulations (anonymous calls are accepted).
