CURRENT SITUATION:
Monroe County Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storms Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna.
Tropical Storm GUSTAV
Based on the 11 AM Thursday, August 28th, Advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the center of Tropical Storm Gustav was located about 45 miles east of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 350 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman.
Gustav is moving toward the west near 5 mph and a continued westward motion with a gradual increase in forward speed is expected today. A turn toward the west-northwest and northwest is forecast during the next couple of days. This track will take the center of Gustav near, or over, Jamaica today and tonight, and near, or over, the Cayman Islands Friday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast over the next few days and Gustav could become a hurricane before moving over Jamaica.
Tropical Storm HANNA
Based on the 11 AM Thursday, August 28th, Advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the center of Tropical Storm Hanna was located about 305 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands.
Hanna is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph with a turn to the northwest expected later today. On the forecasted track, Hanna will move away from the northern Leeward Islands and be centered well to the northeast of the Bahamas during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast within the next 24 hours.

Monroe County Emergency Management has taken the following actions:
· EOC Activation at Level 3 – Monitoring
· The EM office will continue to collect and disseminate information regarding the weather conditions
Monroe County Emergency Management encourages all residents, visitors and interested parties to:
· Closely monitor the Hurricane through local weather reports
· Review their Emergency Plan
