Monroe County Emergency Operations Center Level 2 – Partial Activation

Operational Period: September 5, 2008; 6:00 am to September 6, 2008; 6:00 am

CURRENT SITUATION:

Monroe County Emergency Management is the state of readiness for response to Hurican IKE.  

Hurricane IKE is a strong Category 3 expected to affect the Florida Keys this weekend.

Based on the current situation, the Monroe County Emergency Management is taking the following protective actions:

Mandatory evacuation of all visitors and non-residents, RV’s, travel & boat trailers on Saturday, September 6th, 2008 beginning at 9:00 am

Mandatory evacuation of all residents in low lying areas and mobile homes beginning Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 7:00 am

Mandatory evacuation of ALL Monroe County residents to begin on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 8:00 am in the following phased segments:

Lower Keys – City of Key West – MM 40 – 8:00 am
Middle Keys – MM 40 – MM 63 – 12:00 noon
Upper Keys – MM 63 – MM 106 and Ocean Reef – 4:00 pm

Evacuation will continue through Monday, September 8th, 2008 up to 12:00 noon

FIU Shelter in Miami is opening on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 8:00 am

Additional shelter locations will be announced as soon as available

·       Closely monitor this Hurricane through local weather reports, radio stations, TV channel 76 or the Monroe County Website at www.monroecounty-fl.gov.
·       Review their Emergency Plan
·       Recognize that due to the location of this hurricane, it may, unexpectedly, intensify rapidly and threaten the area necessitating the rapid implementation of all preparations and response plans
