2010 Comprehensive Plan
Description
The Technical Document provides data and analysis of the population, physical environment, and infrastructure improvements and needs in the Florida Keys. The Document is laid out in a manner specified in state statutes so that facts and general information provided appear in similar and comparable ways throughout the state.
The Policy Document establishes necessary goals, objectives, and policies for future growth and development in Monroe County. Goals are statements of general need, while objectives and policies are progressively more detailed statements about how the needs of the County's citizens will be met and carried out. The breadth of the document spans a broad range of issues from the need for habitat and endangered species protection to the need to provide adequate infrastructure (water, electric, sewer, solid waste, schools, traffic circulation, parks and recreation, and stormwater, etc.) to the need for adequate protection of the public (fire rescue, emergency management, and hurricane evacuation).
All County’s and municipalities throughout the state of Florida are required under Chapter 163, Florida Statutes to develop and adopt a Comprehensive Plan. Such a Plan typically contains a technical component and a policy component. The Technical Document, including data and analysis, validates policies approved and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in the Policy Document. From the direction provided in these documents, Land Development Regulations have been created and may be found in the Monroe County Code of Ordinances.
