2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the Monroe County Library system and the opening of the Key West May Hill Russell Library on Fleming Street. For half a century our city’s library has served as a cornerstone of the community, providing both residents and visitors access to print and electronic materials, expert research assistance, most especially The Florida History room and its extensive information on Key West, as well as a variety of reading programs.
The Friends of the Key West Library was formed in 1972 by a number of dedicated citizens for the purpose of creating interest in the functions, resources, services and needs of the library. Over the years, the Friends have done just that –we raise money to enhance the Library’s collections, support additional programming, purchase much needed equipment, and improve the facility. The Friends also contribute hundreds of volunteer hours assisting staff and sponsoring community events such as the well-attended book sales and a lecture series that is free to the public.
If you are already a member – thank you for your generosity. If you aren’t a member, I hope you will contact the library to find out how you can join the Friends, make a contribution to the library, or volunteer your time. Please don’t just drive, pedal, or walk by the familiar pink building at 700 Fleming Street. Come inside and see what’s happening; it’s the best-kept secret in town. Our library says much about who we are and what we believe, and will remain a vital part of our quality of life in the future. Please join me in wishing our Library a Happy 50th Birthday and please consider being a Friend of the Library.

President, Friends of the Key West Library
The Friends of the Key West Library always need volunteers for shelving books and for hosting the Internet desk. Volunteers also help at monthly book sales from December to April. Please fill out a volunteer form at the library, and a Friend will be in touch with you. For more information, click here to email Cathy.
