Florida Department of Transportation Announces Crossing Guard Appreciation Day

TALLAHASSEE—Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Safety Office announces Friday, February 5, 2010 as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day to recognize the hard work and dedication of those individuals who brave weather conditions and busy streets in order to ensure a safe journey to and from school for Florida’s children.

“Crossing Guards play an important role in our community,” said Stephanie Kopelousos, FDOT Secretary.  “Not only do they ensure the safety of our children as they arrive and depart from school, but they also help to deter crime by acting as an extra set of eyes to observe and report suspicious activities.”

FDOT recognizes the following individuals and organizations for exemplary performance aiding in the protection of Florida’s youth against potentially dangerous traffic situations:

John Fugate, Kenneth City Police Department - School Crossing Guard of the Year

Patrick Hartselle, Rockledge Police Department - School Crossing Guard Trainer of the Year

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office - Large Agency School Crossing Guard Program of the Year

Rockledge Police Department - Small Agency School Crossing Guard Program of the Year

Frank Kirsch, Polk County Sheriff’s Office - Special School Crossing Guard Award for Dedicated Service

Florida is a leader among states in its curriculum development and the FDOT’s dedication to providing a free train the trainer program to educate crossing guards on safe and effective techniques.  For more information, please contact the Florida Department of Transportation’s Crossing Guard Train the Trainer Program Administrator at 850-245-1757.
