As of 1 February 2011

SOAR Key West is a free admission, one day, new and exciting annual aviation event at the Key West International Airport!  It’s scheduled for Saturday, February 5th, 2011 from 0900-1600.  The good news is there is no schedule beyond that.  Everything you can do at SOAR can be done anytime all day long so you can visit at the time that works best for you that day.  There are many things you can do at SOAR:

You can fly!  If you are a minor between age 8 and 17, you can fly for free!  One parent has to be present to sign the release, however.  This fantastic opportunity is courtesy of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) Young Eagle program, which is a national program that has been in existence for decades and that has flown hundreds of thousands of kids across the US.  For adults and kids, for a fee, you can fly in the last remaining WWII B-25H Mitchell Bomber still flying in the world!  You can also fly various aircraft operated by Freddie Cabanas of the Conch Republic Air Force including a 1941 J-3 Cub, 1942 Waco UPF-7, 1943 T-6 Texan, 1985 Cessna 206 Amphib, and a 2003 Pitts S-2C.  While you are there, check out flight training opportunities from Island City Flying Services and become a pilot yourself!

You can win!  We are having a free raffle drawing every 15 minutes all day long to give away numerous valuable prizes and you do NOT have to be present to win.  You just need to fill out a raffle ticket with your first name, cell phone number, and zip code as you enter the gate and then wait for the call that you have won a prize of your choice.  We have a certificate good towards a one hour flight simulator mission in Orlando worth $1,400!  We also have two coach class tickets on AirTran, two 5,000 mile Delta Sky Miles certificates, one free flight on a Key West Seaplane float plane, free passes on the Fury, Sebago, and Sunny Days Catamarans (sunset cruises or snorkel trips), free round trip tickets on the Key West Express, free 2 hour rental of an electric car from Conch Electric Cars of Key West, two $50 gift certificates from West Marine, a $50 gift certificate from Pilot Mall, gift cards from Winn-Dixie and Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co., a free, half day boat rental from Garrison Bight Marina, free subscriptions to Atlantic Flyer Magazine, Fly-Low Magazine, Light Sport & Ultralight Magazine, and Trade a Plane Magazine, free memberships to Women in Aviation International, Experimental Aircraft Association, and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and much more.  And nobody walks away empty handed because we are also giving away FedEx reusable shopping bags (as long as supplies last), ball caps and ear plugs courtesy of AVEMCO (also as long as supplies last), numerous aviation magazines and catalogs (again, as long as they last), and many of the vendors have free gifts for the taking on their display tables.  Additionally, US1 Radio 104.1 will be doing a live, on site radio broadcast between 11:30 and 13:30 on the aircraft ramp and they have lots of give-away prizes too.

You can dream!  If flying isn’t your thing but you still love airplanes, then SOAR is the place for you.  We have numerous aircraft on static display, some of them you can even walk through or have your photo taken with you at the controls and/or with the pilot, or just talk to the pilots to learn about them and their amazing flying machines.  We have an original 1958 Eastern Airlines DC-7, 1931 Stearman Speedmail, 1942 Vultee BT-15, 1944 P-51 Mustang, 1946 Ercoupe, 1949 LTA-6G, F-8F Bearcat, 1982 Long EZ, Cessna 172, 1958 Cessna 182, a Key West Seaplane Cessna 206 amphibian, a FedEx Cessna Caravan 208, a Blue Sky Yakrobatics 1985 Nanchang CJ-6N, Maule MT-7, a Florida FWC Partenavia P-68, a Florida Mosquito Control Bell 206, a Cessna O-2B Skymaster, a MCSO 1984 Sikorsky S-76 Trauma Star, a Life Net Key West 2006 Eurocopter EC-135P2, a 1960 Gulfstream G-159, a Lake Amphibian, a Hi-Tech Aerobatics Sukhoi Su-26M, and military aircraft from the USCG, USN and Florida Army National Guard to name just a few.

You can play!  We have the Home Depot Kid’s Workshop where kids can make things.  And we have Mobile Mountain’s Kids Zone Inflatables, the largest aviation theme inflatable kid’s zone in the US!  You and your kids can play until you’re just too tired to play anymore.

You can shop!  We have numerous vendor display booths at SOAR offering a wide variety of products and services.  We also have numerous exhibitors at SOAR that are not selling anything but instead are offering information on a wide variety of topics.  We have Armed Forces recruiters, the Civil Air Patrol, DTC DUAT flight planning and aviation weather services, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida Keys Mosquito Control, Kennedy Space Center/NASA, Key West Airport Fire & Rescue, the National Weather Service, the Seaplane Pilots Association, and more.

You can explore!  While most of SOAR is happening on the aircraft ramp area just west of the main terminal and tower, there are also things to see around the rest of the airport.  At the far east end we have FedEx, Greyhound bus station, Customs and Border Protection, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s airport offices.  Upstairs in the main terminal we have the Conch Flyer restaurant, the Last Chance gift shop, Jet Lag gift shop, and we have ‘Art in Public Places’, courtesy of the Florida Keys Council for the Arts which includes art dating back to the Work Projects Administration (WPA) created by President Roosevelt in 1935.  Don’t miss the unveiling of the George J. Faraldo bust at 11:30 upstairs in the ticketing area.  George Who?  George J. Faraldo was born in Key West in 1919, learned to fly at the age of 15, flew combat missions in WWII, and then became manager of the Key West Airport from 1946 to 1975!

You can eat!  We have food and beverage booths on site so you can get something to eat or drink while you enjoy all of the other activities.  Please use our trash and recycle bins.

You can relax!  Okay, not really!  SOAR is a fun-filled activity the whole family can enjoy.  You can relax afterwardsJ
