Engineering Department Mission
The Engineering Department's goal is to provide residents and travelers with a safe and worry-free infrastructure on which to travel.

Road Responsibilities

Aside from U.S. 1 and its rights of way, which are under the purview of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Engineering Department oversees the design and construction of Monroe County's roads, public rights of way, bridges, sidewalks, and bike paths. The department also maintains U.S. 1 and the county's traffic signals and street lights. Engineering also issues all right of way and driveway permits.

Storm-water Responsibilities
In addition, Engineering develops and manages the implementation of the county's Storm-water Master Plan. It also reviews individual surface water management plans as part of the county's building permit process for both residential and commercial developments. Engineering issues all right of way use permits needed throughout the county. For more information on how to develop a stormwater plan, please read Monroe County's Manual for Stormwater Managemnt Practices.
