Library FAQs
Q.

A.

How do I get my Library card?

Library cards, which may be used at all County libraries, are available at no cost to all residents of the Monroe County taxing district. Please contact your local library to determine eligibility. Click here for library hours, directions and phone numbers.

Children who reside in Monroe County, as evidenced by parent/care-giver address, can receive a library card as soon as they can print their own name, with parent/care-giver permission. Parents or care-givers are responsible for monitoring materials that the child borrows and are financially responsible for the child's overdue fines, damaged or lost fees.

Lastly, we offer our visitors a membership card for $15.00 annually. This amount is based on local property taxes that support the library. Your library card may be used at all five Monroe County public libraries and entitles you to all the services of the Monroe County Public Library.

Where are the libraries located?

We have libraries in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Please click here to view directions to each library.

I'll be visiting the Keys, do you offer Internet access?
We offer Internet access at all library locations. This service is free to residents and visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. Please click here to view directions, hours and contacts for each library.

When do you offer progams for children, adults, and senior citizens?

Please check our library calendars for upcoming events. Many Friends of the Library organizations provide a newsletter of events for members. Click here to visit our Friends groups.

How long may I keep a book I've checked out?

Books check out for two weeks. Other items, like DVDs and videotapes, check out for one week. (Of course, if you will be traveling or hospitalized, etc., we can always adjust the due date for you.) If you haven't finished with your items by the due date, call your library or log into your account online, to request a renewal. If no one else is waiting for that item, you can renew it for more days. If you don't bring your items back by the due date and you haven't renewed the items, you'll be charged an overdue fine. So, please renew!

What if my (dog, parrot, iguana) eats my library book?

Bad dog! You are responsible for returning library books and materials in good condition. There may be a charge to replace the damaged item. Talk to a librarian and explain what happened--we love a good "...ate my book" story!

May I return my library books to a different library than where I checked them out?

Yes, return your library books to any Monroe county library. We'll get them back to their home library.

Do you participate in an Interlibrary Loan Program?

Yes! If we do not have a specific book or other item in our collection that you would like to borrow, you can request an item through our Interlibrary Loan Department. Our Interlibrary Loan department will make every effort, through an interlibrary loan network to obtain materials which are needed, but are not available in the Monroe County Library System. Once we locate the item and the lending library has it available, it will be loaned for a limited time period. Interlibrary loan requests are limited to three at one time. Click here for the Interlibrary Loan form.
