Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps

Monroe County Emergency Management believes that “strengthening the Florida Keys communities through volunteerism and service” is not just a mission statement. It is a way of life.

Following lessons learned from Hurricane Irma, Monroe County Emergency Management now is creating a “Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps” that will be made up of volunteers with a variety of talents and skills who would like to help in time of emergency in the Keys.

An inaugural meeting of this new emergency volunteer program was held on May 21, 2018 and led by Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty SenterfittAbout 70 people attended the open discussion on how to best utilize the incredible untapped talents of the Keys residents and build a response capability that surpasses all expectations

Citizen volunteers who go through Monroe County’s Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) and become part of the volunteer Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps also can obtain early re-entry placards. To volunteer for this program, go to www.monroecounty-fl.gov/volunteermonroe or click below.

Monroe County's version of the CERT program is being finalized, but the first phase is taking a free online FEMA course, called FEMA IS-317 Introduction to CERT. You can begin taking this class at any time, by clicking the link below. It takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete.

For more information about FEMA's CERT program, go to FEMA's CERT information webpage

The second phase will include about 16 hours or so of in-person CERT training at locations throughout the Keys. These classes will be taught by local CERT instructors. Monroe County Emergency Management already has held its first training for CERT instructors on June 16 and 17.  Taking the online FEMA Introduction to CERT course is a prerequisite to taking the in-person CERT training.

A third phase of practical skills and exercises will round out Monroe County's CERT program.
